The Marxist revolutionary leader of the Russian Revolution , Leon Trotsky , still has the most lucid explanation of the rise of fascism in Nazi Germany : it is focused not on ideology -secular or religious - but on the interaction of CLASSES in conflict with one another. Trotsky saw the defeat in World War I , the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the general decay of global capitalism as bringing about this heinous " New Regime " in Germany led by Hitler and the Nazis. Today there is a similar crisis of capitalism and American imperialism in the USA arousing a huge section of the American plutocracy , now recruiting to their CAUSE assorted lumpenproletariat riffraff and crazed ruined petty bourgeoisie. In " OUR democracy " the rise of American style fascism has nothing do with the agendas of any organized religion. Christian " nationalism " -indeed CATHOLIC nationalism - would represent a fundamental break with New Testament teaching of Jesus Christ.
