My own experience gathering signatures for a presidential candidate: Socialist Workers Party candidate for president of the United States , Peter Cameo 1976. I was a presidential elector here in Rhode Island ( a public record ) We did succeed in getting the 1000 valid required signatures to put fiery leftist Cameo on the ballot . We were warned to get at least 2000 signatures because the political establishment was ferociously hostile to third party candidates , especially communists and socialists. WE are still around in " OUR democracy " ! If there were numerous invalid or fake signatures on what we submitted , would that have been SWP candidate Camejo's fault ? My and my friends' fault? I did joke with one " comrade " : " In Providence you will find that mostly derelicts or philistines ([liberal democrats turned off by " socialism " but still " liberal " ] will sign your nomination papers. " I suspect Sabina Matos was a VICTIM here of a shady political operation. A lot of FALSE PEOPLE in capitalist USA ! NOTE : Peter was not elected president of the United States in 1976. But he went on to the Green Party years later and was Ralph Nader's running mate ( 2000 ? ). I remain an INDEPENDENT democratic socialist. Sad to say it does seem that most MARXIST " vanguard party " organizations have degenerated into bizarre personality cults comparable to the " Church of Scientology ". I could never be a " Clear " for any cause. Still reviewing decaying capitalist America many years later , I still think : " Karl Marx was right ! " . There is clearly a crisis of the TWO PARTY SYSTEM . And what a choice for the 2024 presidential election : Trump vs. Biden . YUK !
