Unfortunately this fine novel, forced in high school English classes on mentally unprepared students , goes underappreciated later in life.But I liked it and I liked George Elliot literary style. A lot of literary appreciation depends on background knowledge as does UNDERSTANDING any topic in general. A book titled CULTURAL LITERACY explains this very well.
