The " enduring " British monarchy and the crowning of King Charles in London

I watched the CROWNING moment early this morning covered by NBC ( local Channel 10 ) NEWS> Comparable to a new Pope being anointed in Vatican City. The insights of modern science on Nature , the Universe , and human society are only a few centuries old , with the core of them coming in just the last 100 years. How much technical progress in just the last 25 years ! Truly -and ironically - the AGE OF FAITH and the DIVINE RIGHT OF KINGS ( and Queens , like Victoria in Britain ) - still exists side by side with the Hubble telescope and your personal computer. The solemn ceremonies that the British Royalty and the Catholic Church can still put on are psychologically overwhelming. I can feel a certain awe mixed with healthy , SPACE AGE cynicism. Think about this : most of HUMAN history remains in a permanent Dark Age. Before that WE were just emerging from THE BEASTS ! As both very SOCIAL and very consciously SELF-CENTERED creatures we had a unique existential problem in organizing human society. When there was some vaguely COLLECTIVELY decision to recognize some families ( aristocrats ) as special and some individuals ( emperors, kings , queens ) as VERY SPECIAL , like maybe " divine ) grander if not happier human societies became possible. THE ONE could act more swiftly, with his own unified will and unified memory , and unified intellect , than a group of cranky and incurably PROUD old men ( like the Roman Senate was for a couple of centuries ). THE ONE could more easily touch the hearts of the people , his " subjects ". There are profound UNCONSCIOUS reasons while so many people in Britain ACCEPT the monarchy. And why our very own privileged class in the USA envy the British royalty with their pompous kings and queens. But TIME is ultimately merciless on all human institutions. Our collective MEMORY in public libraries and state and church archives testifies to this cold TRUTH. A thousand years from now scholars will still be mesmerized by whatever is left of the VATICAN SECRET ARCHIVES .
