The stupid looking man at the bus stop was yelled at by the disgusted
RIPTA driver : " Don't blow your smoke into my bus ! "
While the traffic light was still red, the nicotine nitwit puffed
away on the precious remains of his cigarette - for him a basic necessity
of life.
I suspect that the brain of the heavy cigarette smoker -under
microscopic examination- will look as repulsively rotten as his lung
tissue.
The Tobacco Road cretin tossed the drool covered butt onto the
sidewalk before boarding the Pawtucket bound bus - the original
inspiration for H.P. Lovecraft's " Horror at Red Hook ".
There is a story in the Providence Journal this morning that
will alarm environmentalists : " DEM's inaction endangering Rhode
Islanders " ( Dec. 30 ) .
It is about time we include those highly toxic cigarette
butts among the hazardous environmental wastes. Why is the cigarette
slob's habit of of carelessly discarding them EVERYWHERE not challenged ?
Think of the millions of people who smoke a pack or two a day
and of the impact all those poisonous butts have on the eco-system!
This nicotine addiction is as insidious as heroin addiction.
Cigarette companies survive on the LIE of advertising, associating
the filthy habit with the pleasant life.
Tobacco company scientists MUST routinely LIE UNDER OATH .And
so must their bought and sold lawyers - like Clinton persecutor, Ken Starr !
But even on December 30, SPRINGTIME IS JUST A PUFF AWAY. Just
thought I should end this rather bilious letter on a cheerful note .

were alive to demolish the credibility of that phony psychic John Edward.
I am sickened by the daily commercials- with Twilight Zone like background
music - advertising his " gift " : getting grief stricken people in touch
with their dear departed. This charlatan's " gift " would not withstand a
serious scientific investigation.
A low point in his hocus-pocus career: exploiting the grief
of Sept. 11. On October 25, 2001 he was ready for a very profitable TV
program : communicating with the dead victims of the World Trade Center
attack. Just let their friends and relatives know that all is well with
them in the spirit world.
Sanity prevailed - and John Edward lost big bucks.
By the way I just received an mystical communication from
the ghost of Carl Sagan : He says that non-existence is easy enough
to accept. Just billions and billions of hydrogen atoms waiting to get
recalled to life.
He just wishes he could still fight the good fight against
scientific illiteracy.

"Israel quietly helping U.S. prepare for war with Iraq " ( USA
TODAY,Nov.4 ) . Oddly enough Saudi Arabia -a neighbor of menacing
Iraq- is not enthusiastic about helping us at all. And a lot
of healthy young rich kids in Kuwait -which owes us - will applaud
a U.S. invasion of Iraq in the safety of their own luxurious homes.
An old fashioned American woman would scold them : COWARDS !
The same for young Jews who rarely risk their lives
against rock throwing Palestinians. Just study the casualty
figures for Jews vs. Palestinians !
I say if a war with Iraq is inevitable, an invasion
should be led by soldiers - thousands of them ! - from Kuwait
and Israel.
Remember D-Day - the ALLIED invasion ? I would prefer to
see multi-cultural pictures of bloated corpses. It is only fair
to America's youth.

KIDS IN PRISON on Discovery Channel
Ask the whole world: HAVE YOU NO SHAME ? That's what I
thought while watching a Discovery Channel documentary- a world-wide
perspective on kids in prison, in Texas, in Britain, in Russia, in
Brazil ( most horrible of all ! ). This is indeed the stuff for a
United Nations report, for Amnesty International.
Not for nothing I decided more than 20 years ago that
I never want to bring children into this abominable little world !
You do not need a PHD in sociology to see the common denominator
in their lives ( with few exceptions ): They had wickedness to choose
ignorant paupers for parents !
One kid says : " If I'm living on the street -and I don't
steal- I'll starve ! ". But he promises his crying -dying - old
mother ( prematurely old ? ) that he'll be a GOOD BOY when he gets
out of that hell.
How does their society attempt to REFORM them ? By pure
terror, fear of AUTHORITY (" You forget to say SIR, punk ! " )
To SIR with love : Get a life. Too bad for you to miss out
on the Nazi thing !
All the other people who deal with these kids -if not
evil and well intentioned - look like comfortable, well fed,
petty bourgeois bureaucrats -with hearts of pure plastic.
How many of these kids have a future in terrorism ?

Allergic to the very spirit of Christmas, a Warwick Fire
Dept. dispatcher destroyed a co-worker's decorations - wanting
" a Christmas free work-place ". A direct descendent of one Ebenezer
Scrooge - not yet visited by ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and
Future ? Or did he just forget those little " helper " pills that
get millions of normally decent people through the JOYOUS season ?
To be sure, the spirit of consumerism poisons the season
for the most good natured amongst us. If I were a radio personality,
I would read to the kids this poem on the night before Christmas:
" Howl " by the Jewish beatnik A. Ginsberg. THEN I would offer
the music of Bach as a sedative.
Don't be too hard on that cheerless dispatcher: Tis a very

CRANSTON R.I. HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH
The whole country now knows that Cranston, R.I. is a big
mess- with the lowest bond rating in the nation, now even lower after
our Honest Abe mayor, Stephen Laffey ( I like him ! ) expressed his
own " depressing assessment " ( PROJO editorial, Dec.10- " An honest BB ")
The economic situation here makes even passing through hazardous
to your health. For example, if you are lying injured on a busy main
street like Reservoir Ave, don't expect the police or an ambulance to
come to your rescue. And don't expect them to investigate what happened
to you. And don't expect them to help you with a gargantuan medical bill.
And for the bigger picture here in R.I, I will say that the
Ocean State has literally gone to the dogs. Vicious dogs own most of
our urban streets. And they are now beginning to announce their presence
in once idyllic rural Rhode Island.
The visitors to the Ocean State are more likely to encounter Cujo
here than Jaws.
Perhaps Governor Carcieri will improve the situation. Was not
THAT his campaign slogan : RHODE ISLAND IS GOING TO THE DOGS ?
And he won ! Good luck and God bless him.

“ You know what it is like to BURN ? “ the nearly delirious prisoner Pablo, who was only 20 years old but just sentenced to “ life “ for murdering the saintly girl Maria, asked old judge Juarez .
“For you the Almighty has prepared the torment of his Inferno. When I look upon your evil face excited by mad lust I hear all the screams of the damned. But I will waste no more words with you. Guards take this abominable being into the earthly abyss that we have prepared for him until his Maker calls.”
When Maria Santos would not let the hot blooded Pablo have his way with her under the falls of the sacred grotto, he strangled her to death. Dr. Perez for posterity made one of those ghastly “ death masks “of the martyred virgin.
Later he had an idea: he made copies of the death mask in bronze. A true work of art ! One of the bronze death masks of Maria Santos was secured - beyond
tampering - on the stone wall of young and passionate Pablo’s cell.
He refused the crucifix but day and night he had to look at his pitiful victim, captured by the finest art of Dolorosa, in her death agony.
Judge Juaraz had “ mercifully “ spared the “ burning “ young man the death penalty. But Pablo - after 40 days in his cell - would not spare himself: He was found at three o’clock in the morning . His body was now cold. He had hanged himself with Maria Santos’ long, black rosary beads - which he had cleverly hidden as fetish of his infatuation with the 14 year old girl.
Pablo was buried - without holy ceremonies -in the desert.

A fishy Tale
Last night I had a nightmare perhaps inspired by the "fish eye" soup that I saw a man known as the "Old Salt" savor at an East Providence restaurant. In the nightmare I was back in Washington Park of the 1950s at an exotic aquarium fish store named Dagon's.
I was accompanied by my friend Norman - the "boy scientist." Norman expressed an interest in buying an unusually beautiful fish for his science teacher, Miss Brodie, whom he had a pre-adolescent crush on.
Old Mr. Dagon said in a discouraging tone: "Why you look like you own no property!" The price of the fish was $50.00 - indeed a little too expensive for poor boy Norman.
Then the nightmare became confused with reality. I remember Norman going back to Dagon's the next day and without hinting to me what he had in mind, dropped a tablet of Alka-Seltzer into the tank of the highly desired fish.
We returned to Dagon's after school and saw the ghastly result of Norman's evil prank: the beautiful fish was now a sickly white bloated corpse. Mr. Dagon was just scooping it out of the bowl. He gave Norman the "evil eye".
That summer Miss Brodie, on her honeymoon in South America was attacked by a school of hungry piranhas. There was not even a funeral.

Bob, I just read your column. I am not ashamed to confess that
I just could not get myself to vote for ANYBODY in this election.
The negativity was horrendous. Every candidate's opponent was a moral
monster -or a dangerous weirdo. I KNEW Myth York would lose with that
shameless TV ad making a fiend out of the affable Don Carcieri.
No wonder politics in America no longer attracts the best
and the brightest. What type of people want the public to fall in love
with them on the basis of short introduction and vapid and asinine TV
and radio sound bites ?
I personally feel more affinity for the 1950s beatniks - BEAT -
than left wing politicos or phony 60s flower children. But I abhor the
FAR RIGHT. But the Left in general should rethink the gospel of political
correctness.
I feel sorry for those loser political hacks who invest their
heart and soul -and future - on a the sham democracy of the political
circus. I might have voted for the Cool Moose character - he had the
right idea.

Providence Journal columnist M. Charles Bakst has truly gone off the deep end on gay rights issues. He is now disappointed that the Vermont Supreme Court " failed to legalize same sex marriages . "
At the core of modern bourgeois marriage is property and procreation. Gay thinkers - and " non-breeders " - like witty author Gore Vidal - have mocked the sacred institution again and again. And indeed they have satirized it brilliantly.
From a RADICAL perspective, gay marriage would simply be a farce of a farce , a mockery of a mockery ! A capitalist society should not recognize gay marriage unless it is prepared to profoundly transform the institution of marriage for everybody - forever.
What every divorced man discovers -TOO LATE ! - in court is that PROPERTY - not love & affection - is at the heart of marital bliss. Too late does he learn that his "immortal beloved " has the soul of a shopping mall. How dearly he pays for love's illusions !
What could be more ludicrous than an unhappy gay couple arguing bitterly in court over who should get the dog ?

My New year 2000: asleep by midnight !
The year 2000 has great psychological significance for me - a lot to think about. Since I share Mr. Whitcomb's aversion to the relentless NOISE around us - and since I am sick of 2000 hype- I plan to seek Peace & Quiet on New Years Eve . A very meditative hour or two and then -hopefully - I shall be contemptuously sound asleep by midnight. And blissfully refreshed in the morning assessing the first day of New Times.
The BIG NEWS of the morning : " Boris Yeltsin is back in the hospital ... " ? People will conclude that the coming of 2000 was the biggest dud since the Edsel. One frequent cougher at the Warwick Public Library was identified as a one time resident of Harrington Hall ( for the homeless ) in Cranston. The best critics of Zionism are Jews themselves
For many years now most socialist groups have been quicker to defend anybody's free speech rights than today's very illiberal liberals. For me the best and most credible sources of Zionist criticism are Jews themselves who have never betrayed their humane ideals.
For example , the late Oliver Sacks - a rather non-political Jewish neurologist . In his biography " Uncle Tungsten " Sacks talks about his very negative impression of Zionist fund raisers for Israel in his English neighborhood in the 1940s. The famous scientist ( played by Robin Williams in the movie " Awakenings " ) described them quite simply as " bullies ".
On You Tube you can find scholars Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky passionately defending the rights of oppressed Palestinians.
In 1975 the United Nations declared Zionism to be a form of racism. But in the United States today it seems like anti-Zionism is considered anti-Semitic racism.
To be sure, no real socialist is ever seduced by toxic nationalism.
I love my country too. But I don't love capitalism and I don't love our greedy ruling class. And I won't say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE to imperialist occupiers.

My Italian barber is past age 80 and named " Sal ". Sal now works part time at " Jim' Hair Salon "on Reservoir Ave. in Cranston- not far from the Burger King on Park Ave. I think my younger brother John was a regular customer of retiring Tony. These old Italian immigrant family barbers hear a lot of tales and often tell them. That Knightsville neighborhood near St. Mary's Church is the quintessential Italian-American neighborhood. Even the road is divided by those red, white, and green Italian flag colors.
My Italian immigrant grandmother, living on Federal Hill for 50 years, would -affectionately I am sure - put down my " shoe maker " grandfather: " Hey, Shoemaker, I should've married The Barber ! ".
When my grandfather, Ludovico, lost his own shoe repair shop he found work at UNCAS Jewelry - but was scolded for being " too slow ".
Those old City of Providence Directories( 1922- 1965 ) still found in the reference area of the Providence Public Library can refresh memories about the Old Neighborhood. My grandparents lived at 62 Gesler St.
At Pops's funeral ( from Nardollilo to nearby St. Ann's Cemetery ) my brother Mike and I suddenly had a moment of hilarious, comic relief , doubt : Was Pop ( Domenico ) -just possibly- il barbiere 's ragazzo ?
Another Italian barber memory : a guy known as " Sanitary Joe " misunderstood my kid brother Mike's hair cutting instructions and Mike showed up at an Italian wedding with an awful looking crew cut- just a Marine Corps boot camp style shaved head.
I can still smell Sanitary Joe's Bay Rum- a bit of olfactory pleasantness in his dingy joint
A quartet of Italian barbers had a shop in Washington Park Square in Providence back in the 1950s One had a reputation as " a bookie ". Another said that my uncle Nicholas -fluent in the Italian language - was a " fascist ". The boss of the place was Al . Sitting in the barber chair I could see my Broad Street School and Collier's bakery .
I visit my elderly -but still good- barber Sal only four times a year: in summer, fall, winter, spring. But no social security increases next year ( and soon no more Senior Bus Pass ) . So just one hair cut for me next year- just before Easter. Sorry about that, Sal !

Watching the war news on TV, I often caught references to
the Bradley Tank - a formidable " smart " weapon , I understand . Time
will tell just how wise was this pre-emptive attack on Iraq - led by
the bloody megalomaniac, Saddam Hussein. I do " support the troops " -
but with great reservations. Patriotism is a poor excuse for brainlessness.
That Bradley Tank had to be named after the famous mild
mannered and thoughtful World War II American general, Omar Bradley .
In his biography " A General's Life " he hints at his politics which I
do find refreshingly AMERICAN in the best sense : " I was in sympathy
with most New Deal measures because, like my father,I always pulled for
the little man, worker and farmer . "
Such a general today - assigned to rebuild Iraq - might
truly win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. Imagine an
American general establishing a workers and farmers government in Baghdad
-and saying " Nuts ! " to Big Oil - like Exxon ?

Sheen and Jane Fonda -with music by the Dixie-chicks .

I am not neurotically annoyed by too many things. But

of media attention ?
What a contrast between the nightmare news and the
demeanor of the celebrity news people - ( they ooze narcissism ) -
and the bestial FANS in the street.

about the future of humanity. A decayed species will inherit the
earth. Public education gives most kids a vocabulary of 100 words
- BASIC ENGLISH. A dismal future for the newspaper business !

After reading Gerard J. DeGroot's article " Feeling My American-ness "
in the Christian Science Monitor, I 'm feeling : "I'm a liberal and the
British left is perking me up ".
But he is right about a number of things - like this dulled
sense of EVIL on the left. They no longer have the long view of history,
mindlessly scorn Western Civilization and foolishly idealize the oppressed.
I wish George Orwell were alive to comment on the present world
crisis. Unlike many of my comrades on the left , Orwell had the gift of
instantly recognizing HUMBUG . Also too many leftists have become rather
pretentious and humorless in not recognizing the Absurd, the utter
indifference of the Universe to the human heart.
Let's try to make this a better world - or at least a less
horrible one. But let us not pretend like old fashioned Marxists that the
cosmos is on our side.
And thank God for left-wing Jews. They are the salt of the
earth.

Reflecting on headlines of the past three months, I wonder about
the state of youth today. What are the best and the brightest thinking
as they see tired old men like Arafat and Sharon continue to wage tired
old wars - indeed the Middle East seems more and more hopeless. Hate is
the " gift " that keeps giving. Must the Jews annihilate the Palestinians ?
Or the Palestinians the Jews ? HOW can the nightmare end ?
I re-read with some bitterness the famous Port Huron Statement
that founded the SDS ( Students for a Democratic Society ) in its
primal innocence : " We are the people of this generation, bred in at
least modest comfort, housed now in universities, looking uncomfortably
to the world we inherit ".
Bitterness mixed with nostalgia for an idealism that now
seems impossible. Still the torch must be passed to the youth.

Macabre headline in this morning's newspaper about " heinous " practices
at a Florida cemetery ... owner of world's largest cemetery company
" aware of grave desecrations .... loved ones were dug up and dumped in
the woods , buried in the wrong graves. The bereaved families definitely
not getting what they paid for !
When the profit motive goes berserk, one wonders about the future
of human dignity. I always felt that we should take the profits out of
the burial business. Egalitarianism should prevail in the end for ALL of
us. One must ask : How much space in a crowded world can be set aside for
the dear departed anyway ? We should ALL be buried cheaply with simple
dignity in bio-degradable coffins ( if not cremated ) .
Bereaved families should be charged NOTHING for final resting
places. Take the profits out of the funeral racket. And we can ALL rest
in peace !
This hideous story is just capitalism in its infinite
ugliness. God can do wonders with our dust if we are just patient enough.

Letter published April 17-24, 2003: I am not a fan or defender of the now imprisoned ex-mayor of Providence, Vincent "Buddy" Cianci. But I did not want him to languish in prison.

2013 blog : Nothing wrong with MEN-WOMEN restrooms
I guess I'm old fashioned in even questioning this unisex use
of Providence Public Library restrooms -distinctly labeled MEN...
WOMEN. I observed two males being given keys to WOMEN restrooms because
the MEN rooms were all occupied. I had just returned a key to a WOMEN
restroom when I suddenly realized that I was not, after all, FEMALE
and I did not want to cause a scandal ( being seen entering a WOMEN
room might get a decent guy tagged as a pervert -especially nowadays !)
When I questioned a male employee about this unisex use
of library restrooms, he snarled at me. Then I went to get my coat
in the periodical room where three kids were at a READING table playing
cards.
On the way out a derelict friend of mine -known as Emo the Cat
Man- said that my mind must be degenerating for even thinking in such
narrow categories !
My sister , a day care school supervisor, must be even more
degenerate than me. She wondered why a LADIES ROOM in a local night club
had a condom dispensing machine . I guess she was not as liberated as
" Sally " .
How many female readers of this newspaper would use a
public library LADIES room more frequently used by homeless male
derelicts ?

This was the first visit of brother Steve and I to a somewhat hidden jewel of Rhode Island: the Providence Athenaeum Library on Benefit St. . I was mesmerized by this elegant OLD FASHIONED library with its now antique card catalogue , browser friendly desks near book shelves where not a single book is a waste of public library space. I understand the ghosts of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft haunt this place ( probably hiding in the cracks of the old wooden floors ) .

There have been improvements in downtown Providence. If a person is not too self-absorbed and can SEE what is before his or her eyes, the person will EXPERIENCE the city-ironically.named-as one of the most depressing places in the world.
Not being a world traveller let me say that I still experience it as a most depressing place. If you catch a bus frequently in Kennedy Plaza-with Mayor Cianci's City Hall right in front of you, you will observe that the area is too often and inexcusably FILTHY.
This FILTH is our welcome to numerous visitors to our State of Rhode Island-which on the whole IS a beautiful place.
Kennedy Plaza, it seems, is a magnet to the kind of people described by Jack London as the "People of the Abyss." They are so degraded-by poverty, ignorance, a hideous life style, neglect, imbecility, and not the least by VERY BAD GENES- that they fall through the cracks of ordinary human sympathy.
Is this a new underclass or just the old one grown more numerous and visible? A generation ago most of these people would have been in mental institutions-too INCOMPETENT to care for themselves.
I do not even pretend to offer a solution to such mass wretchedness. Only a Mother Teresa can LOVE such people. She would say that God loves them. I dare not LAUGH at this most saintly woman. But why should innocent victims look so much like the DAMNED of Dante's Inferno?

Years ago a friend of the family would now and then show up at the house more than a little drunk burned up over his mother-in law who lived at his house. He would take out a switch-blade knife and
say in a gangster tone of voice, "I'll kill her! But she won't die. She's TOO ROTTEN TO DIE! "
Later, a little calmed down, he would say, "She'll be a pall bearer at my funeral!" "Nonna" was indeed around for a while. But just about everybody but our "guest" thought she was NICE.
Jeanne Calment finally died at age 122. She gave up cigarettes in 1995 ! Even that vile stuff couldn't deliver her to her Maker. She outlived her husband (which is the norm) but also her daughter and grandson.
Jeanne, after a certain very impressive age was made a fuss over and said she was "never bored."
But ordinary old people seem not just old but often broken hearted. In not a few cases of extreme old age the person has the "advantage" that there was never any "heart" there to break !
When I was sixteen years old a gypsy fortune teller at Rocky Point Park-of dear memory-told me that I would live to be 150 years old. ( Eat your heart out Jeanne Calment!) But that just cannot be. For I am a sentimental slob!

I AM AGE 50 TODAY!
I am 50 years old today. I have had ten years to think about it. I remember turning 40. Last night I was in a Greta Garbo mood: " I JUST WANT TO BE ALONE!"
A semi-sweet melancholy. When I awoke this morning the sun was shining brilliantly in a clear blue sky. Nature, of course, is utterly indifferent to our birthdays. In my existential point of view, the COSMOS itself is utterly indifferent to our lives. I would like very much to believe in the FORCE but there is no evidence for it.
Perhaps the FORCE believes in me! I am no saint but nobody would call me a scoundrel. I have maintained close friendships with a few precious human beings. A bachelor by fate or choice, I still cherish my now very extended family . I have no personal enemies and no heinous deeds on my conscience.
I am a rare bird on this planet-a truly free man! The world does not seem a very happy place to me. But it is a very interesting place. Curiosity alone can keep somebody like me going for a long time . I have laughed at AMBITION all my life (inspired by the ideas of Albert Camus). And AMBITION, of course, has laughed right back !
If the GRIM REAPER were to knock on my door tonight, I would say, "But I am not ready!" "I have not achieved my PURPOSE." "What purpose?" He might ask scornfully.
"Why as passionately as any of King Arthur's knights, I AM STILL SEEKING THE HOLY GRAIL".

[I was greatly saddened by the death of Kennett Neily a few days ago. Ken was one of the original “Providence Pals”—the gang of Lovecraft devotees who congregated around Brown University in the later 1970s and early 1980s, and which included Marc A. Michaud, Jason C. Eckhardt, Ronald Marshall, Herbert Marshall (no relations, apparently), and several others. Ken, although substantially older than most of us, was an incredibly genial and supportive individual, and his devotion to Lovecraft was second to none. He died suddenly, but peacefully, after suffering a stroke a short time ago. Peace be to his shade! ]

Good morning Ron! As a member of the Lovecraft circle here in Providence for many years, I know you would be very disturbed by today's headline in the Providence Journal: "New Lovecraft mystery surfaces at Swan Point".
You and I have made frequent visits to the gravesite ourselves. At times we observed petty but disrespectful vandalism there ourselves. The atmosphere around H.P grave is for me eerie reminder of the cult horror film, "The Night of the Living Dead"
Lovecraft himself was a dignified scholar, indeed a philosophical Materialist, and would have scorned many silly cult groups inspired by his brilliant horror fantasies. I wonder what S.T Joshi thinks about this latest abominable deed.
According to the paper: "Cemetery president Dugan declines to elaborate on the grave desecration not wanting to attract more attention. "But–Is he there?" - he is asking himself.
I'm sure H.P would have delighted in writing a horror story dealing with a suitable punishment for
anybody trying to rob his pitiful remains - for what? A profitable sensation?
