The socialist movement in his time came close to Catholic social philosophy. But many years after the Communist Manifesto was published in 1848 it does seem that Marx was less than scientific in his proletarian politics. In general, the categorical PROLE comes closer to Orwell's proles in " 1984 " and American socialist writer Jack London's " People of the Abyss " proles. Rather than be the " gravediggers of capitalism " this huge part of the more respectable WORKING CLASS these proles -drunken, dope addicted, jobless , homeless , sexually debauched, crime prone, derelict - are very much their own grave diggers . Did Marx perhaps underestimate how big the " lumpen-proletariat " would get in advanced capitalist societies ?

Dumb RIPTA bus drivers?
I felt. a cold day in April waiting for RIPTA bus 3 in Cranston near St.Paul's Church.On this bus I was annoyed that the bus driver had completely unnecessary air conditioning on.Later in Kennedy Plaza I boarded the 5:20 RIPTA 30 bus back to my Cranston apartment and was annoyed that the bus driver had the completely unnecessary air conditioning on.

Lowe's Theatre is still there in all its stunning architectural glory. Its new name is PPAC or the Providence Performing Arts Center. Lowe's once had the largest cinema screen in Rhode Island but for more than 60 years has been open for live performances. My Dad was instrumental in getting power back on line. He worked for the Reynold's Metals Company in Massena, NY (on the Canadian Border). The plant received it's power from the Robert Moses Power Dam up there. As he worked in the Rectifier Station, his job was to convert AC to DC for the production of Aluminum. When the Blackout occurred, He worked with the Power Authority of the State of New York to divert electricity from the plant to Con-Ed in New York City.

I was at the New York Hospital giving birth to my son Abimael, when the New York electric power went off. I had just given birth to my baby, so I didn't experience what my family did. The hospital electricity plant was activated, so I wasn't in the dark but for a few minutes. But my kids did experience it, and still remember the experience.

In central NJ we did not have a blackout. However, there was no TV that night because all the stations were from New York. I remember my father turning the dial but nothing on, just snow.

I was 12 in Connecticut. My mother's 42 year old twin sister had died earlier that day. I remember it so well. Dark, cold, eerie. The darkest evening of the year.
My father had died a few years earlier at age 44. My mother said that death happens in 3's, who would be next? A couple of years later, her younger brother died at age 38.
Yes, I remember it well.

I was a junior in high school and my sister was a freshman. Mom had just dropped us off at Junior Achievement when the lights went out less than 5 minutes after mom left. When she came back to pick us up, she said she was going down the big hill near our house in Massachusetts and saw something in the sky. All I know is when mom picked us up she was shaking so bad, I had to drive the 3 of us home.

Power momentarily went off in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine as well, but was restored quickly. Im not sure about Quebec. People talked of power fluctuations in the grid all the way down to Florida, but lasted just seconds.
