I am no candidate for the Legion of Mary, but fail
to find fault when a Catholic college like PC feels
compelled to defend her honor as a sacred symbol of a
RELIGIOUS institution .
Does Free Speech mean we have the right to offend
anybody anywhere under any circumstances - with no
negative feedback , no consequences ?
Does not a Nazi also have the right to be evicted
from a synagogue as well as to communicate with
newspapers , radio , and TV ?
I have spent many hours at the PC library. The
public would be amazed at the anti- Catholic periodicals
that can be found there. " The Militant " and " The Humanist "
- which no doubt believe in " immaculate abortion " - can
be quietly appreciated there. And no doubt scholarly
debate on Catholic sensitive issues is not unknown
there .
Can one imagine a man like Father Lennon - both
pious and intelligent - just censoring other points
of view ?
Somehow MANNERS can be reconciled with free
speech.
The offending students at least owe the school
an apology. Myself more and more offended by militant
and erratic and obnoxious , I find the Virgin - myth
or reality - an appealing figure.
Intellectual immaturity must not be mistaken for
ideological fervor. That irreverent poster was also
a crass loser as publicity gimmick.
Brains will tell - even at PC !
A militant INDEPENDENT democratic socialist's attempt to expose the truth of our culture – in all its rich irony and absurdity.

Did Brown " affirm " Robinson ?
I read with amusement on page A-5 of the Providence Journal
today ( March 22 ) : " Kennedy foe reveals past and loses GOP
support ". The 39 year old wealthy business executive -" a
graduate of Brown University " - is perhaps a lush, a rapist,
a non-intellect " flunking the bar twice in New York and
once in Texas " , a plagiarist - perhaps ?
Ironically Teddy Kennedy - whom I do admire - was
always a big supporter of " affirmative action " . And
so was Brown University .
After reaping the benefits of the LIBERAL Ivy
League, people of color like Jack E. Robinson ( was he
named after the great baseball player ? ) attach
their loyal asses to the Republican Party .
Perhaps compassionate conservatism can forgive
them !
I note that Jack E. " didn't really study " for
the bar exams . What amazing self-esteem ! The
most brilliant law student would have the humility to
actually study for that fateful exam .
Was Robinson puffed up with self-esteem at little
cost at Brown University ?
Have a drink on me Jackie . What will it be :
scotch, gin or brandy ?

Protect " Open Records Law " !
" They are trying to overhaul the state's Open Records
Law with a bill designed to protect their privacy " , I read
on your front page today ( March 16 ) . More March Madness ?
I agree with opponents of the Bill - like Staci Sawyer of
ACLU - that the bill is dangerous and " incredibly vague " .
" Open Records " is a keystone of democratic " check "
on government power. For example it may be used to investigate
police brutality or corruption at Buddy's Place , Providence
City Hall.
Even in a fairly healthy democracy that are hundreds
of entrenched would be J. Edgar Hoovers ( above " there are " )
who thrive in the dark : Don't you dare cross THEM ! They
know all about your dirty little secret ! "
The ONLY check on these creeps is an informed
public - and a news media that is unconstrained in investigating
them .
When newspapers like the Providence Journal go to
court for " open records " , the public is wise to
support them . More often than not it is corrupt
power that just does not want to be embarrassed .
Honest people have little to fear from our

So democracy is tyranny - for gays ?
Yes, " once again, voters oppose gay marriage ". A silly
letter in the Boston Globe today ( March 11 ) suggests that
this democratic majority is really a tyranny: " Democracy
exists to protect the minority from the tyranny of the
majority. " Well, I guess when we elect a president every four
years, this is a shameless exercise in tyranny !
Providence Journal columnist, Charles Bakst - sulking
from the California rout of gay marriage - says that the majority
of voters are ignorant bigots . They know not what they do !
The INSTITUTION of marriage simply was not designed
for gay people. They have no more right to marriage than I
have to a military funeral - which is prejudiced against non-
veterans .
Imagine a gay kid singing :
" I won't go to bed till
I'm legally WED " ( a song from " Grease " )
I applaud the common sense of the good people of California.
And many married people associate " life, liberty, and
the pursuit of happiness " with the unchained , carefree SINGLE
state.
That will end with fateful words : " I now
pronounce you Man & Man ! "
Will the gay engagements and weddings be announced on
the society page ? Who will want a " shower " and who a
bachelor party ?
Oh what a circus ! Gay marriage - a farce of a
farce !

The quiet evil of snobbery
Perhaps influenced by late winter longings, I was attracted
to the lurid cover of a paperback magazine while browsing at
" Twice Told Tales " in Pawtuxet Village : " Tales of the South
Pacific " by James A. Michener .
After reading " An Officer and a Gentleman " , I reflected
on one of the ironies of our " democracy " : there are no
laws against social snobbery - a quiet evil that ruins millions
of lives.
Michener's non- hero character, Ensign Bill Harbison,
is unhappy with the navy because his star is not rising fast
enough - while a brother in law has just made captain in
the Army . Not much to do on that South Pacific paradise but
try to stay in shape with the sports there. At night he
dreaded a pile of letters - always stupid and naive - which
was his duty to censor. " Bill never saw any human dignity in
the letters he read ".
Bill is attracted to a pretty nurse , Nellie
Forbush - " from a small hick town in Arkansas " , and
from a social class way beneath gentleman Bill.
One day Nellie looked so beautiful on the beach
that Bill just had to have her : " He ripped her dress and
brassiere ".
" Bill ! Stop ! " insisted Nellie .
" He paid no attention to her entreaties but kept clawing
at her underwear ".
In desperation Nellie hit him on the head with a
coconut.
A little later in the story Nellie realizes - of
course ! - that she loves Bill - but will he marry her ?
Is there a chance - " when the war is over ? "
Officer and Gentleman Bill Harbison was flabbergasted
by the nerve of " a common little girl from some hick
town " . Never in a hundred years would he have noticed
Nellie Forbush in the states.
We will assume that Nellie ( recall her name from
the popular musical " South Pacific " ) had to wash
THAT MAN right out of her hair .
More than a half a century after World War II,
democracy is thriving in America and the gap between the
social classes is greater than ever.

Left Thumb Down On Gay Marriage
Watch California on this burning issue of gay marriage .
I cannot believe that only far Right Neanderthals disapprove
of gay marriage. Politically correct nitwits - who care not
to think too deeply about the meaning and history of the
venerable institution of marriage - mindlessly support gay
marriage. See how open minded, how progressive they are !
But gay marriage can be ridiculed - good naturedly
of course - from a LEFT perspective. In fact I am amazed
more liberals don't see just how CONSERVATIVE is the
idea of gay marriage. To be sure , it cannot make any gay
relationship more respectable than it is now. Religious
people - and they are numerous - who disapprove of
homosexuality - will not be impressed by gay
weddings. And gay " divorce " will be a god-sent to
comedians .
What is clearly needed is not gay marriage - which
would be a mockery of marriage ! - but state recognition of
gay " partnership " - with some minimal legal consequences.
How absurd this idea of gay marriage would have
seemed in the radical 60s ! LOVE is just impossible between
two gay people until church and state bless their
relationship !
Instead of gay marriage , the state should
legalize gay and straight PROSTITUTION . That will take
care of the economics of " love " .
Hurricane McCain is right about gay marriage: It
is just crazy . But a self respecting liberal will not
stand in front of church doors to stop it.

Encounter with the Unhappy Hooker
" Do I look depraved enough to deserve this ? " I
asked myself on the Pawtucket bound bus. The woman who
sat beside me in the back of the bus suddenly offered to
perform oral sex on me in her Roosevelt Ave. apartment
- " while my husband is away " - for just 10 bucks .
I 'll admit that I was aroused - not by the dazed
young woman's looks which were sleezy - but by the bold
sexual proposition. " I guess it's just a fetish with
me ", she explained .
Honestly my empty wallet - along with a measure of
common sense about THE LAW and AIDS - rescued my
virtue in the back of the bus .
After reading about the latest on TV marriage , I'm
convinced that prostitution should be legalized. Millions
of voluptuous - and greedy -females should not be denied
vocational fulfillment !
And I do miss the decadent 70s !

" Ready " with prejudice at 200 Main
Most working people attracted to a " Work Today-
Paid Today " sign in a storefront are probably down and
out - if not desperate. Many faces in downtown Pawtucket
are right out of Jack London's " People of the Abyss ".
If they are looking for an honest day 's work ,
" Labor Ready " at 200 Main St. is just the thing. But
they are eager to humiliate the worker just as he
walks through the door. There is mirror beside
the application desk and a half a dozen truly insulting
signs :
" Would you hire this person ? " above the mirror.
" You are terminated - if you tell me how to do my
job ... disturb the peace - once .... walk off - once
... no show - once ."
" Labor Ready has a no tolerance policy regarding
alcohol ". Don't get caught drinking on the job or reek
of booze even before they send you out.
No distribution of literature on the premises . They
will tell you - scumbag working class losers - everything
you need to know about your rights.
Reading those signs from the sidewalk , I felt
lucky to not need " Labor Ready " on this day . But
you never know .
I reflect in the morning cold on the brotherhood
of oppression. Yes, I can understand " Losers " everywhere !
