Dan Rather 2011 documentary : Detroit Public Schools- a National Disgrace

Disgrace of our public high schools

A vivid picture of what American public school education is coming to for ALL the country was given by a May, 2011 documentary reported by former CBS news anchor Dan Rather : " Detroit Public Schools- A National Disgrace. "

I watched it on You Tube mesmerized for nearly two hours. An old story by now - kids in high school who can barely read. The right wing loves to blame powerful teacher unions for this miserable failure. To be sure, the quality of public education in Detroit is comparable to the quality of water in Flint, Michigan.

Twenty years ago you could go to any public library ( they still work ) and find a shelf full of books written by burned out teachers with more " experience " than they bargained for in the inner city schools.

No matter how sensitive they were to the race issue, they make it clear that the root of the problem was generalized poverty. It is not easy for any student - black or white - to rise above the " culture " of the Other America.

The Dan Rather documentary concludes with this bit of advice : listen to the heartbroken students. The education bureaucrats are almost useless.
