As mayor of Providence Independent Vincent " Buddy " Cianci was certainly an able and creative- and beloved to many- leader. The " Prince of Providence " could be brazenly independent of the local-not less " corrupt "- political and economic elites . I recall Mayor Cianci being rejected by the snobby ( and anti-Italian ? ) Brown University " Gentleman's Club ". There was a very hypocritical campaign against him in his " Last Hurrah " election. As a democratic Socialist I have a class perspective on the nature of political corruption. Once they understand that their " obligation " is to the ruling class, Rhode Island politicians- mostly Democrats- have no scruples about taking care of Numero Uno too. All those ANTI-CORRUPTION pillars of the community now doing business as usual in ever corrupt Rhode Island. Governor Gina Raimondo just appointed our very own Czar of INNOVATION. Cianci joked about that on the air.
The Catholic Bishop of Providence, Thomas Tobin , had kind words for Vincent Cianci. The Catholics have an ancient perspective on Sin & Redemption.
Cianci was finally convicted of no crime in particular - just being a mysterious , sinister influence.
A star of local Talk Radio , Mayor Cianci was a habitual blunt- truth- teller. Very sinister indeed !
