Lottery superstition and capitalism

Carl Sagan's astute observations in his book " The Demon Haunted World " apply to lottery mania in the United States. But there is more than popular ignorance and superstition behind this vulgar circus. In a capitalist society of obscene inequality the lottery conditions the working class to accept the capitalist social order: winner take all and to hell with social sanity and social justice. A democratic Socialist government would abolish the gambling industry overnight. The fate of social " surplus value " will be determined by the criterion of " general welfare ".
Charles Dickens was a great and humane writer but his sentimental fiction has changed the heart of only one Scrooge- the fictional one. Today the Catholic Church promotes a humane social philosophy while the American ruling class is besotted with Ayn Rand Thought. Ayn Rand was a militant atheist who worshiped money and capitalism.
Carl Sagan's leftism was indicated by his essay on the " socialist " Albert Einstein.
A " socialist " like Bernie Sanders should condemn the lottery: it too has become " the opium of the people ".
