Has New Atheism idol biologist Richard Dawkins just proclaimed trillionaire Elon Musk as the savior of the world ? No, Richard Dawkins has not proclaimed Elon Musk as the "savior of the world." However, he has publicly praised Musk's intelligence and stated that he believes Musk has the "welfare of the world at heart." The context behind this stems from a November 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter) where Dawkins criticized Donald Trump while positioning Musk as a highly intelligent "silver lining." Dawkins wrote: "I take (possibly forlorn) hope in the fact that although Trump is a mendacious, malevolent, transparently evil man, and stupid with it, Musk is not. He is highly intelligent and, diametrically opposed to Trump, he has the welfare of the world at heart." Key Points of Alignment and Distinctions • World Welfare vs. Savior: While Dawkins has commended Musk's technological ambitions—such as SpaceX's Starship milestones and Mars colonization goals—he views him through a lens of scientific progress and existential risk mitigation, not religious or literal salvation. • "Cultural Christians": Interestingly, both the evolutionary biologist and the tech billionaire have independently described themselves as "cultural Christians." Dawkins has noted that he appreciates the cultural and historical impact of Christianity on Western civilization despite not believing in its supernatural claims, while Musk has shared that he aligns with many of the moral principles taught by Jesus. While Dawkins has been criticized by sections of his own secular audience for being overly optimistic about Musk's motives, he has never bestowed a religious title like "savior" upon him.
