Is the Cosmic Microwave Background a Huge Mistake? [ When did SCIENCE " jump the shark " ? ]

As a non-scientist but science literate I am sure that advanced technology all around me , the wonders of modern medicine , are solid PROOF that -WITHIN ITS BOUNDARIES - SCIENCE gets the universe right . Until it crosses over into a type of Metaphysics in which Catholic Theology still shows some centuries old INSIGHT . At some point the starry eyed high priests of the Big Bang sort of " jumped the shark " . Did astrophysicist Fred Hoyle get it right ? Perhaps H.P. Lovecraft's " COSMIC HORROR " comes closer to existential TRUTH ?
