In lecturing on any science topic very few teachers do not make presumptions about very important background knowledge. Without this even bright students will think that some topics are hopelessly over their heads.How do you acquire background knowledge? By reading around a topic in the absence of approachable teachers. Often acquired knowledge can feed human vanity: " I am just so much smarter than YOU!". Then use vocabulary and jargon unfamiliar to a curious learner.
