On TV news tonight I learn that some American public schools have re-discovered the value of phonics - as if English- like Chinese -lacked a consistent (with some irregularity )SOUND SYMBOL SYSTEM . For many decades in the " OUR democracy " there were so few public teachers to boldly challenge the quack LOOK and SAY system for teaching reading to elementary school children . Considering the connection between reading and FREEDOM was this not a real crime against humanity?
