In the shadow of King Solomon's magnificent Temple : squalor and misery and superstition and mental darkness for the masses

Browsing the Latin Vulgate -English version of the Old Testament " Kings " - I was struck with the impression that the author and his contemporaries were awestruck by this magnificent building -the work of HUMAN hands. The author lovingly describes Solomon's Temple in detail . But contrast the glory of the Temple with the almost certain misery and squalor of the Jewish people living around it . Life for them - centuries before modern science and modern medicine - was " nasty , brutish , and short " and lived out in superstition and mental darkness. In a way this most unfair concentration of dazzling wealth at least showed that MAN ( as a species ) was now much more than a brute . Perhaps concentrated POWER in the KING and the royal family could accomplish feats beyond the feeble " democracy " of the collectively impoverished common people. For many more centuries the common people , slaves and peasants , could not even read. And even if they could, printing had not been invented and precious manuscripts were no doubt off limits to the hoi-polloi . So the poorest people on earth today do indeed benefit from the AGE OF SCIENCE and modern technology.
