Little Rhode Island made the New York Times today. I learned this while listening to local radio 630WPRO Gene Valicenti's morning news and talk show.
From the NEW YORK TIMES
"A reading at a storefront library in Providence, R.I., was interrupted on Monday night, when a group of people carrying a flag with a swastika banged on the windows of the building, shouted slurs and chanted “white power.”
The Red Ink Community Library, which describes itself as a “nonprofit community library, reading room and organizing space,” was hosting a reading of “The Communist Manifesto” by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels for Red Books Day, celebrating the 174th anniversary of the day the manifesto was published.
In a video stream of the event, someone is seen reading from the manifesto when a sudden banging is heard offscreen, followed by a number of slurs being shouted. The person tries to continue reading, while a group is heard outside shouting slurs and “white power.”
After several interrupted attempts to continue reading, another person steps in front of the microphone and wraps up the event."
ReplyDeleteAs a long time democratic socialist influenced very much by Marxist thinking in the analysis of this exploiting, oppressive, capitalist economic system -and by Catholic social philosophy - I must frequently caution well meaning people on the Left to respect the FREE SPEECH , FREE THOUGHT tradition of Western Civilization.
Would these Neo-Nazis - if they are not just a joke - want to see Hitler's " Mein Kampf " banned from public libraries ? I still would not let the " bourgeois " mainstream news media decide - without consulting what is left of " OUR democracy -" what constitutes HATE speech and HATE crime . Let the New York Times editorial board finger " the haters " in the United States ? What a joke ! And how very hateful were " liberal " Democrats in recent years promoting the HATE TRUMP , HATE RUSSIA, New McCarthyism ! Have they not prepared the country for a stupid war over SOVEREIGN Ukraine ?
A student of the FBI's COINTELPRO activities in the late 60s and 70s , a presidential elector here in Rhode Island for the Socialist Workers Party in 1976 and in 1980 , I suspect this Nazi group has an FBI agent for its guiding light. Since 2001 J. Edgar Hoover's finest have been very much a " Terror Factory " themselves.
The " liberal " , " progressive " , Democratic Party for decades now have hardly been champions of FREE SPEECH and FREE THOUGHT in the USA. We offer " OUR democracy " to NATO and the Ukraine ?
