What the public schools of the United States should respect is the FREE SPEECH , FREE THOUGHT tradition of Western Civilization. In recent decades -ironically - the " liberal " , " progressive " Democrats have been more contemptuous of this tradition than conservative Republicans - especially concerning freedom of conscience , freedom of religion .
