As a journalist H.L. Mencken had many virtues. Today he is forgotten after being smeared also as an incorrigible anti-Semite.
My vision of Christianity and Catholicism can survive Mencken's intellectually honest but wrong headed scorn . Mencken is therapeutic reading for " liberals " today obsessed with identity politics and political correctness. His scorn for the American plutocracy rivaled any socialist's .
Paranoid fear of anti-Semitism takes on ludicrous forms. At the URI Extension Library in Providence I found Hitler's " Mein Kamp " wrapped in red covering hiding the title of the book , the author, and Library of Congress code. At a COLLEGE library !
ANY book no matter how unpleasant reading can be most useful and instructive to scholars. I will check on it again when I visit the URI library in Providence , Rhode Island.
