The memory of an old friend named " Emo " ( once the subject of a Mark Patinkin column back in 1998 ) came back to me recently . Fate made him homeless in his mid -70s . Now and then I would encounter Emo at the Providence Public Library , a sensitive , observant , philosophical soul
.
.
If Emo is still alive , he would be in his mid 80s at least. Some homeless people are a lot tougher than they look.
But how many elderly homeless in Rhode Island die without even the dignity of a published DEATH NOTICE ? The STATE is more careless here than any " free enterprise " newspaper.
Like Jacob Marley's ghost in Dickens' " A Christmas Carol " Emo's face still haunts me on walks in the city.
