A neglected witness to the Holocaust years : " I Will Bear Witness ", diary of the Nazi years ( 1933-1941 ) by Victor Klemperer. What impressed me as I browsed the book in the library was that it deserved as much public attention as " The Diary of Anne Frank ". Klemperer later joined the Communist Party in East Germany and was very scornful of the Zionist project in Israel.
Klemperer seemed to be an old fashioned FREE THINKER in the tradition of the French philosopher Voltaire . A true " Cosmopolitan Jew " .
He must have a died a very disillusioned man in Orwellian East Germany. But his huge diary records the daily humiliations and misery of a relatively " free " Jew in Hitler's Germany. His World War I service got him a measure of leniency ( in contrast to the horror of the concentration camps ).
