The " Mother Teresa Effect " on " The People of the Abyss "

Studies: US life expectancy drops as mortality rises among younger adults

Here in Rhode Island I have never seen so many visibly distressed and disturbed young and middle aged individuals - evidently burnt out on drugs and alcohol . A dollar begged does not even get them a cup of coffee -just a cheap lottery ticket.

Beyond the narrowly focused abortion debate there is clearly no RIGHT TO LIFE in capitalist America.

Outside a Dunkin Donuts in Cranston I see regularly now a red eyed, blotchy complexion, ghastly white male seemingly in need of immediate medical attention . Seeing him again on a RIPTA bus that passes near the notorious Harrington Hall homeless shelter , I wonder if he has a contagious disease. Does anybody " official " notice ? Anybody " official " care ? Then I spot a dead rat in the street.

How can such wrecks of humanity not be thinking of suicide ?
Unless there is an EQUALITY revolution in the not too distant future humanity is in danger of dividing into separate SPECIES . To be sure , nothing DARWINIAN forbids it .

But I have also observed how a few months of compassionate care, nourishing food, clean rooms , medical attention, a recovered PURPOSE in life -call it the Mother Teresa Effect - can work wonders on these " People of the Abyss " ( a Jack London book title ) .

How could the human race have survived a million years if PURE SELFISHNESS was always just " human nature " ?

All you need is LOVE ? It helps !
