The essence of vulgar patriotism : GOD IS ON OUR SIDE !

With all their educational opportunities even the most intelligent and " trying to be moral " members of the American ruling class suffer a paralysis of thought in understanding THEIR economic and political system.

Yes , even the idealist Hegel got this right : all things come into existence, develop, and decay. Whatever IS is right but only for a while. There is a movement in human history that finally escorts all rotting social and economic orders , all effete ruling classes, off the stage.

With this view of History as a form of motion how annoying it is to hear conservative and even " liberal " voices slobber with 4th of July vacuity over the American Constitution and the Founding Fathers as historical absolutes.

They always seem to brand Jefferson as a pretty free thinking atheist ( one of them ? ) . But it is a truly religious emotion that permeates vulgar patriotism ... " God is on our side ! "

Almighty God given an eternity to form a PLAN , could come up with nothing better than " The American Way of Life " ?

Was it the great American patriot Catholic , Francis Cardinal Spellman , who said " there are no atheists in foxholes " ? Not the best promotional point for ANY theology.

During the Vietnam War Catholic Cardinal Spellman ( who in many ways betrayed the social philosophy of the church) declared it was a holy necessity to combat " godless communism " .

What would the good priest say about Putin's Russia today ? Well at least it is not " godless " with the Orthodox Church singing praise to Czar Putin. And Russia is also NOT " communist " but on the contrary very much CAPITALIST .

But who am I to question God's marching orders ( as they are sent via the American CIA and the New York Times ) ?

Vulgar patriotism can be rather stupid and dangerous to your health, mental and physical .
