It would interesting to investigate if this growing tariff war with China is taking its toll on completely " respectable " Chinese Americans. I just read in the Providence Journal that Cranston Mayor Allan Fung , a strong Republican candidate for governor of Rhode Island , may have been the victim of " identity politics " sensitivity -if not blatant bigotry.
While digging up excuses for an apparently " rent free " arrangement with the owner of his campaign headquarters (a paltry sum of $1500 ) Fung could be " digging all the way to China ", another candidate for governor( Patricia Morgan ) sarcastically remarked.
Also targeted as " suspicious " a number of Chinese based " Confucius Institutes " at the University of Rhode Island and elsewhere.
But if there were any serious prejudice against Chinese Americans in Rhode Island , Allan Fung would not be where he is today, mayor of Cranston and a formidable threat to the " neo -con " Democratic Governor Gina Raimondo.
( Come to think of it, Rhode Island Republican Patricia Morgan might also be the victim of " identity politics " sensitivity. )
