I love Newport too . I recall a visit to Rosecliff mansion where " The Great Gatsby " was filmed. The F. Scott Fitzgerald novel actually condemns the " reckless " lifestyle of the Jazz Age Roaring Twenties rich and famous - their completely decadent drunken all night parties. Their fascist toned table talk about the lower orders.
Today it is right and reasonable to question the moral legitimacy of " legitimate " wealth. Jay Leno may be a NICE human being -like many rich people. But what did he do to EARN all that wealth- so many stale wit late night jokes ? What mental or physical exertions entitle ONE PERCENT of the population to have so much more than the rest of us combined ?
Think about it while on that Cliff Walk by the sea some fine Newport Summer Wine day.
