I am certainly not contemptuous of that generic principle of
Civilization represented by written law. Even the most greedy ruling
class individuals cannot -literally - afford to scorn THE LAW. I suspect
the " radical " lawyer Ralph Nader ( I voted for him twice ) is a
bourgeois legalist at heart. The very ambiguity of the law allows for
interpretations favorable to progressive causes. If that were not so,
there would be little anxiety over a federal judge or a Supreme Court
judge.
Judges, lawyers, and even cops have written interesting books telling readers how they perceive social justice.
But in general the substance of THE LAW is hostile to the labor movement, to economic interests of the working class.
Probably many " liberal " Americans have an Atticus Finch ( " To Kill a Mockingbird " ) nostalgic view of the righteous lawyer and the MAJESTY OF THE LAW - even after the innocent are found GUILTY.
