Our Memorial Days mostly honor war -confusing patriotism with militarism

The association of patriotism with militarism is quite wrongheaded. As a youth famous scientist -pacifist and socialist- Albert Einstein joked about soldiers marching in the grand Prussian style : " They don't need a brain. A spinal cord would suffice ", he thought.

" America First " militarism is just as stupid. " What if they start a war and nobody shows up ? " ( a Vietnam era question ) .

Our Memorial Days mostly honor war- not the mentally and physically ruined veterans - or the speechless dead . The Dalton Trumbo novel " Johnny Got His Gun " speaks for all of them-even many years after the Great War - " the war to make the world safe for democracy ".

Sad to see the Democrats evolve into a neo-con war party, the kind anti-imperialist American author Mark Twain ridiculed more than a century ago.

Even our " good wars " always begin with a lie.
