What " socialism " really means

" He argued that her economic policies would ' plunge our inner cities into even deeper poverty, if that's possible.' "
As a critical supporter of " socialist " Democrat Bernie Sanders I think Donald Trump - on the far right - perceives our " Wall St. Hillary " as more to the left than she really is.

Hillary Clinton and the neo-Democrats have abandoned that old New Deal . pro-labor liberalism for a whole generation now. Even in foreign policy they are effectively neo-cons.

Socialism does not mean giving unemployed people survival " benefits " indefinitely. It means taking control of private means of production and replacing the profit motive with the higher ideal of a sustainable economy and the ideal of rational usefulness ( in contrast to the crackpot " wisdom of free markets ") .

To be sure, under democratic socialism people will not wear themselves out at meaningless jobs or have their souls stultified by the division of labor. Today even the rare " blessing " of a steady job with future " generous pension " has its hellish, depressing side.

Ruling class control of both the news media and public school education makes it nearly impossible for even bright and uncorrupted young people to imagine the " socialist future ", to cease thinking that capitalism is an eternal law of nature. Only CHANGE is forever.
