If any educated Russian today wants to understand why the Soviet
Union collapsed , he should read one particular book written by an
insider : Leon Trotsky's " The Revolution Betrayed ".
Trotsky told the most painful truth that a new aristocracy had arisen in Russia in less than 10 years after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.
So corrupt was the new " communist " bureaucracy that Trotsky made a remarkable prophecy: they were capable of leading the country back to capitalism. Without even a tradition of " bourgeois " democracy, the regime could easily become similar to Nazi Germany.
Indeed there is today a growing neo-Nazi movement in Russia. A young Russian thug said in a documentary interview that he had no qualms about killing unwelcome migrants to Russia.
It seems self-evident that the new rich in Russia have their roots in the corrupt Stalinist bureaucracy.But I read that the old Communist Party is also having a revival in Russia.
Astronomer Carl Sagan said in " The Demon Haunted World " that there has been a revival of
dark superstition and all kinds of pseudo -science in 90s Russia. Sagan said he had smuggled into the country a copy of Leon Trotsky's " History of the Russian Revolution ".
Leon Trotsky was assassinated by agents of Stalin in Mexico in 1940. He died a dedicated communist.
