Age is not irrelevant in deciding WHO should lead a country. One
reason I voted for Bill Clinton back in 1992 was his baby boomer age,
just a little older than JFK in 1960. But the Clintons soon betrayed
their 60s generation idealism. This betrayal was obscured by vicious
attacks on them-on their progressive position on national health
care,for example-by the far right.
Old Ideas cannot be likened to tired old brains. Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto appeared in 1848. Darwin 's Origin of the Species in 1859.
No biologist today would suggest that evolution is a tired old idea. And no competent historian or sociologist would suggest that democratic socialism is a tired old-and much discredited- idea.
I just heard on the radio that Bernie Sanders was wearing a DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST button.
The questions for scholars : Can a Democrat be an honest socialist ? Can socialism actually be democratic ? As a democratic Socialist myself I give " critical support " to Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Quite frankly I suspect Sanders will be pushed out by the establishment of the Democratic Party. Then he should at least inspire the formation of an independent Labor Party.
