The writer wonders " how a democratic society can function if..... ".
Even Robert Reich points out that America's super-capitalism is now
completely incompatible with any popular " democracy ". A socialist has
no problem making connection between one issue and another- the unifying
idea being the class division of our society. Legal marriage is not all
about validating true love. It is about private property relationships.
For that reason alone no true socialist ( he or she need not be
irreligious ) will slobber over and sentimentalize gay marriage-which is
just bourgeois marriage extended to same sex couples.
For me the capitalist state is best symbolized by the electric chair and the policeman's club-not Cupid.The only people anxious about gay marriage recognition are people over-concerned about marital property rights.
What ever happened to old fashioned FRIENDSHIP ? Must that also be institutionalized ?
Most gay marriages will end up in divorce court -just like most traditional marriages.
