The root of racism in America is not various racist symbols. Here in Rhode
Island one black activist on Talk Radio insists that the official state
name- " The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations "-has got
to go. But a few years ago this racial complaint did not survive a
popular vote. Why not put the Confederate Flag symbolism to a vote in
South Carolina ?
A fight over symbols is the right play for cheap political opportunism.But what will change- a racist SYSTEM ? We democratic Socialists have always believed that the evil of racism is part of the larger evil of CLASS oppression in capitalist America. I think at least ONE Democrat, the " socialist " Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, understands this.
Police brutality against black people in American happens every day now under the banner of Old Glory.
