    Just to balance this topic -yet another - on the insufferable male privilege of interrupting women of even high social status: a passage in " Some novelists I have known " by Somerset Maugham.

         This particular novelist was a guest in Maugham's home. A woman friend of Maugham was eager to meet with him - " a marvelous talker " , she was told.  The guest started to talk. The woman quickly interrupted him.

"  He stopped and when she had finished , went on. Again she interrupted him and again he stopped. When she paused he started once more again and again she interrupted. IT WAS EVIDENT THAT HER WISH WAS NOT TO HEAR H.G. TALK  but to have him listen to her talk .He gave me one of his funny grins and relapsed into silence...

        For the rest of lunch he sat mute while she gave utterance to a stream of shattering platitudes....

       When she went away she said she had a wonderful time ".

So Harpy Hillary " won " the presidential debate ?

 Hillary Clinton 's stock in trade is this effete, intellectually bankrupt " identity politics ". While the Hillary Democrats smear Republican Trump as a racist and bigot they never stop pandering to race and gender.

    The whole purpose of neo-liberal " identity politics " is to dull class consciousness and give American capitalist society a veneer of concern for social justice.

          As if imperialist war and class oppression can continue without arousing racial and ethnic hatred. The real American political crisis will come the day after the next president takes office : a very divided America.   [

Sad to say all these " liberal " Democrats paying homage to the life and work of Catholic Worker inspired Henry Shelton are leading the attack on the working class , poor and elderly in Rhode Island. No surprise that the Hillary Clinton political machine was humiliated by " socialist " Democrat Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary last April.

Now and then I come across this thought from individuals not immersed in our " culture of narcissism " : Americans are the most lonely people in the world ". 

The growing scorn for " religious " thought is not a way to " happiness ". Not even secular humanists would recommend the Ayn Rand ( a militant atheist ) " Virtue of Selfishness ".

 So many popular songs are about tragic loneliness . Recall " Eleanor Rigby " by the early Beatles. And a priest thinking " nobody was saved ". " All the lonely people, where do they all come from ?

 I guess only divinity can cure existential loneliness. It is always moving when it assumes a human form.

 You would not expect to find a reference to once X rated movie in a Catholic Church sponsored sermon. But  way back in 1969 " Midnight Cowboy " introduced me to the theme of loneliness in America.

 Friendship helps. The character played by Dustin Hoffman, Ratzo Rizzo, gets a lecture on the dangers of loneliness from a half cracked man : " I was lonely... so I am a ( you name it ) ".

 Ratzo dies with dignity in the arms of failed stud Joe Buck while the two friends are on their way to Florida, the Sunshine State.Lots of lonely old people there reflected Cowboy Joe in a frozen and condemned apartment.

Those old school educational films just a force for GOOD

I must have seen at least a few of these educational films way back in my elementary schools days. 

There is much good sense in them and they do rise above McCarthy Era propaganda. Take the above film , for example : what to do with your time is a question that your inner voice will be asking all your life.

 Reading and walking I have enjoyed all my life.Whatever God there is will talk to you in a walk in the woods.

 Time spent in the public library is never wasted. For the last 20 years the Internet has helped people keep alive any early interests.

 These old films stimulate Proustian memories - like old popular songs and the lyrics too. And today just about everybody has a digital camera, is an amateur photographer.

 Also, I can't find fault with all these " educational " films that just try to influence a kid to be a good, kind, useful citizen. Would they work in public schools today ? Too much domestic chaos ? How many American families even eat together ?

Pravda is extremely focused on the US election.  Pravda has written approximately nothing about the Russian election, which was arranged today.  That makes sense.  The US election is a real election, with political discussion.  There is no real political discussion in Russia.  Putin imprisons or murders the most serious of his opponents, and instead keeps an "opposition" of parties that are loyal to himself.  ---    It seems that for Russians, USA is much more important than Russia.   ---   The research institute Levada has been doing polls that showed that the Putin party would get fewer votes than earlier, so they were defined as "foreign agents" and will have to close.  The election results confirm the predictions from Levada.  Those who tell the truth have a very bad future in Russia.

As a democratic socialist myself I do respect this wise " old radical " Irving Howe. Much of what he said in this interview is relevant to the Bernie Sanders "political revolution " , the focus on unacceptable economic inequality in the presidential campaign of 2016.

 But since the time of this interview what did pass for real " democracy in America " has sadly decayed . The country is evolving  into a militarized police state- with neo-Democrats like Hillary Clinton leading it.

The family of " Don Rogers " ( WEAN ) remembers gentle, genial Jim Seavor from way back in a kinder, gentler era. Rest in peace, good soul. The 60s and 70s were a golden age of local radio. A memory still green. But a moment in time.

To the Editor:

Jim Seavor, a Cranston native and resident until his death last week, will be remembered for his contribution to the arts and many other worthy causes.
Many Rhode Islanders still remember his soothing voice on former radio station WEAN, and then his interesting and right-on-the-mark theatre reviews and stories in the Providence Journal.....

Academia still wallowing in " identity politics "

Democratic socialists - not on the pseudo-left- have a more correct view on Race vs. Class in capitalist America. Is it really possible that half or more than half of Republican Donald Trump's supporters are benighted racists and bigots consumed by crackpot hatred for people of different racial and ethnic groups ?

       Establishment USA supports Hillary Clinton ? No haters on Wall St. , in the Pentagon, the CIA ( torture is good ? ) the FBI ( involved in the assassination of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X ) ? Only righteous souls in the mainstream news media devoted to TRUTH , righteous souls leading organized labor ? All the pseudo-left " intellectuals " for Hillary - not bought and sold by the ruling class ?

            For some bizarre reason Russia's Vladimir Putin sees Hillary Clinton- not Donald Trump - as the face of World War III .

          Are working class people " stronger together " with the nation's military industrial complex ?
Not for nothing working class Rhode Island rejected Hillary in the Democratic Primary last April. No surprise if they now turn to " anti-establishment " Donald Trump. Of course, they still lose on election day.

Democratic politicians and their billionaire supporters -devoted to Wall St. and the Pentagon- are motivated by the darkest emotions from the perspective of working class voters not impressed with capitalist exploitation and U.S. militarism.

 Hillary Clinton wants to lead a ruling class " basket of deplorables ".

Great expectations for the Hillary Democrats : another Great Recession and World War III.

Smearing half of Donald Trump supporters with the innuendo of " ignorant white trash " will not make for civil peace AFTER the 2016 election - whoever wins the White House.

I know many working class people who mistakenly see Trump as savior who will " make America great again " . But they are good decent people.

They just think : " never Hillary " for good reasons

American cynicism-view from Russia ( WATCHING AMERICA )

It is important for the American working class to understand that it has no common interests with the military-industrial complex.

It has no self-interest whatever in World War III with Russia and China . And no interest in the phony endless ” war on terrorism ” as a cover for the New Colonialism in the Middle East.

Russia’s Vladimir Putin is right to fear Harpy Hillary as the face of World War III. Trump will probably always ” make a deal “.

Asian American kids getting more depressed ? I wonder why.

It does not help these young Chinese- American kids to read daily news about official belligerence to " our enemies " China and Russia.

And Hillary Clinton is the candidate of the Pentagon. In contrast to Donald Trump she even has belligerent words for Russia. Russia and China are getting together with naval operations in the South China Sea.

Young people of all races and nationalities need a future to believe in. Not World War III.

  The young working class voters of America should place no faith or hope whatever in " Wall St. Hillary ". " Corrupt Hillary " has the blessing of the corrupt Establishment USA - consisting of sundry " deplorables " in the Pentagon, the CIA, the FBI, the corrupt mainstream news media, corrupt union leaders and corrupt pseudo-left " intellectuals ".
