Dominick Ruggerio-like him or not-is a powerful, gifted leader. And he has been around a long time. I am not at all inclined to smear him, but he did make news some years ago about a condom theft at CVS pharmacy, I recall. My family in Cranston received a crank call about this incident one day. My late father's name was Domenic Ruggieri ( Pop died in 1999 ) I answered the phone saying " MY father has nine kids.So HE is definitely not the condom thief ! " Pop was also a very traditional Italian-Catholic born on Federal Hill.

As a democratic Socialist myself I am very pleased with Senator Bernie Sanders running for president. I don't think he is as far left-in practice-as Ralph Nader. I suspect Nader is more astute in urging a break with the two party system.
Capitalism is completely irrational in so many more ways than superfluous products like cosmetics and soap. It is destroying both the human soul and life on earth. What is so rational about the ONE PERCENT owning America ?

An incredibly depressing thought

I commend both Lincoln Chafee and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont for entering the U.S. presidential race. Hillary is too much an old " neo-Democrat ". In opposing Bush's disastrous Iraq War, Lincoln Chafee was indeed a profile in courage. He is a man of principle in his ardent rejection of the state death penalty. He insisted on the principle of separation of church and state in his unwavering support for gay marriage.
I don't think Bernie Sanders can sell " socialism " to the wealthy Lincoln Chafee or the Democratic Party. But the cause of socialism was never hurt by plain honesty. As the famous psychiatrist Sigmund Freud said the voice of Reason is weak but very persistent and sooner or later it gets a hearing.

Dental Health brigade volunteers at CCRI 's Flanagan Campus

I commend the dental health professionals for their volunteer work at CCRI. But I always thought dental care should be an integral part of any national health care plan.

A lonely thought on LINCOLN CHAFEE FOR PRESIDENT

Personal opinion ... Chafee's presidential bid isn't about winning. It's a strategic way to get some national media coverage and that will make it easier for him to get some sort of cabinet post or ambassadorship.

ACLU supports prisoner marriage rights

ACLU is doing the right thing here. It is inhumane for the state to treat ANY prisoners as the living dead. This business of life without parole is oblivious to the need-even for prison officials- to keep HOPE alive for any human soul.
A truly enlightened prison system would permit prisoners routine sexual relationships-including, of course, gay prisoners.They don't have to be legally married . Free boy friends ,girl friends, or state hired prostitutes can make at least monthly visits.

  RIPTA bus driver is over-vilified here

I am finding more fault with RIPTA than with their working stiff bus drivers. My brother Mike is a retired RIPTA bus driver. The driver also seems to be a victim of prejudice-CLASS prejudice. Talk Radio celebrity Gene Valicenti likened him to the Jackie Gleason character, Ralph Kramden, in the old TV series " The Honeymooners ".
The American middle class is conditioned to see blue collar workers as rude, crude, and ignorant.
The Liberian group here is absolutely wrong to want this RIPTA bus driver fired. To be sure, no unionized workers should ever insist that some other working class person should be fired.
But sadly RIPTA bus drivers can become contemptuous themselves of daily bus riders perceived as " lower class " or worse " illegal aliens ".
Let us all first try to UNDERSTAND the problem here.
[ I am more concerned right now about that RIPTA victim, Bobbie Moore, crushed by a bus on Broad ST. in Providence. Scott Avedisian has tried to blame the victim here ]

He entertains us daily with what passes for local news, is always boosting local business interests, entertains the listeners with his own inflated ego and PERSONALITY.
If you are not successful in your career, that must be the difference: he has PERSONALITY and you don't. Even if you did get all As in nerd subjects-like math, physics, and ancient history.
But Karl Marx can help us here too. Marx said the ruling ideas are the ideas of the ruling class. So if you want to be a SUCCESSFUL news media personality in America-like Brian Williams or Matt Lauer- just have the perfect mental antennae that tune you in to the ideas and values of your boss-the ruling class.
Idealistic high school kids might think that the compassionate social philosophy of Pope Francis is cool. But Ayn Rand Thought is more likely to get you NOTICED. Nothing succeeds in America like " The Virtue of Selfishness ". In general GREED IS GOOD. Teach this to all ambitious kids.
Even NPR " personalities " can advance themselves by TUNING IN to the ideas of the ruling class. Above all forget any SOCIALIST crap . THAT won't pay the bills.And you do need those brighter, whiter teeth- for that seductive shark smile." Smiling Faces " begins the old tune ( by " Paranoia " ) You do have to LIE- and often. But preferably lie with a big bright smile that advertises your SUCCESS.

Barbara Polichetti is very busy lately defending RIPTA's ethical integrity. Sad to hear her try to validate her boss, Scott Avedisian, when -just a few days ago-he attempted to blame the victim for yet another RIPTA bus accident that was completely AVOIDABLE. Her name is Bobbie Moore, age 31, who was nearly crushed to death by a RIPTA bus on Broad St. last Wednesday. If eye witness statements are accurate, RIPTA is legally responsible for vehicular homicide-if Bobbie dies. Barbara Polichetti thinks a RIPTA surveillance film tells a different story. Why not show the public the film of the accident. Bobbie Moore is in " tough, tough shape" at Rhode Island Hospital.
Both Avedisian and Polichetti should resign. Enough is enough !

Who gets to see RIPTA Surveillance videos ?
   Moore was crushed underneath the Route 20 bus near the Elmwood Avenue and Broad Street intersection at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Witnesses told NBC 10 that Moore was chasing the bus and banged on the window to get it to stop. But RIPTA said surveillance video from the bus tells a different story.
"The doors close. The bus very slowly begins to pull away from the curb, and then you see a person falling or stumbling, hit the side of the bus, and then land beneath the rear wheels of the bus," RIPTA spokeswoman Barbara Polichetti said.
Polichetti said an outdoor shot shows Moore chasing the bus and tripping. It's then when she falls against the bus and winds up underneath.
"The driver must have heard something. We're appreciative of the fact that the driver stopped because it appears that he saved her from further injury," Polichetti said.

          Scott Avedisian of RIPTA was quick to blame the victim of yet another bus accident tragedy. 31 year old Bobbie Moore was reported as being in " tough , tough shape " at Rhode Island Hospital in the Thursday, May 21, Providence Journal. Bobbie was nearly crushed to death while trying to board a Broad St. bus on Wednesday.

           In fact - if the poor woman does not survive , and if a number of eye witness statements are accurate-  RIPTA should face a charge of vehicular homicide.

          One witness said : " She was banging on the bus so she could get on, and he just kept going slowly and then he ran right over her, and he had to stop because everyone was screaming ". ( Pauline Goss " who had just gotten off the bus ... "  )

     A RIPTA rider said this in May 30 , 2014 article ( " RIPTA drivers, riders, reflect on system in wake of fatal accident " )  [ a 9 year old girl died ]  :

        "  IF I AM TAPPING ON THE SIDE OF THE BUS , SHOW ME A LITTLE COURTESY ... Some are rude and arrogant ", Jackie Baker of Providence said. "  They seem to forget they( RIPTA Bus drivers ) are public servants "  .

Sociologists like Ashley Montague interested in American culture have commented on the contempt for the human body's basic functions here. Evidence for this for Montague was an astonishing dearth of public rest rooms for visitors or just walkers in any American city.
Could our obesity problem be connected to our public restroom neurosis ? I agree with the title of the article : those disturbing ( to our social conscience ? ) graphic portraits of wounded vets were meant to be stared at. I recall when in grade school staring at a ghastly picture in some book on the Great War.  The wounded vet had no face. It was blown off in that insane trench warfare at Verdun. Now that battle site is a macabre mortuary , a mountain of bones of German and French soldiers. Many survivors were reduced to madness for the remainder of their sad lives. " The Madness of Verdun " - nearly a million corpses left to rot there. The hellish stench of the place for decades.
During the Vietnam War I browsed an anti -war book that was meant to be read : " Johnny Got His Gun " by Dalton Trumbo. The Great War wounded soldier, Johnny , is literally a freakish stump of a man-no arms, no legs, no face. But he still has a soul that thinks. And what he THINKS will not be the stuff of any Memorial Day speeches today. Just read the last few pages for " inspiration ".

     I recently commented that I applaud the democratic Socialist or the socialist Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Any self-respecting socialist does not support an imperialist war. But also they do not over-vilify the individuals chosen by the ruling class to SELL these wars. Nor do they over-vilify individual capitalists -who are just very conditioned to think in a pro-capitalist way.Peaceful social change depends on some breakthrough in class psychology on both sides of the class struggle.No sane socialist would encourage brainless rioting and violence against police officers.

Riders Thursday were mixed concerning their impressions of the drivers. Providence resident Louis Shabazz, 69, said the majority of the drivers on the Douglas Avenue route he takes are nice and wait if they see him coming.

Jackie Baker, of Providence and formerly of Newport, said the drivers are “50-50.”

“Some are rude and arrogant,” he said. “They seem to forget they are public servants … . If I am tapping on the side of the bus, show me a little courtesy.”

When Russia invaded Afghanistan in 1980

Interesting question. Now way back in 1980 I and a young radicalized female were interviewed by the Evening Times in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. We  were reported as saying we -then speaking for the Socialist Workers Party -supported the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan because the Soviet Union could not tolerate such a reactionary regime on its very borders.  But Iraq is not on our borders. And we should have no imperialist interests in Iraq.

Catholic Ireland votes for gay marriage

Modern psychiatry is right and indeed " scientific " in not branding homosexuality as deviant behavior. But too many supporters of gay marriage-"blessed " by the State and not Holy Mother Church -have forgotten the SOCIALIST concept of the state: nowhere today the guardian of anybody's rights but more often the violator of truly natural human rights.

Memorial Day- an honoring of WAR ?

Today's news from Iraq must be painfully bleak to any American soldier with idealistic illusions who fought there, was terribly injured there. Can we not ever rise above all those Memorial Day buzz words ? We know them all too well, hear them in every jingoistic speech.

Considering how LIVING veterans of our dubious wars are treated, I think Memorial Day has become more an honoring of WAR than an honoring of millions of veterans- of good and bad -wars. ( was there ever a truly GOOD war ? ).

      I attended a number of Pawtucket Red Sox games at McCoy Stadium because they were relatively CHEAP.I recall a memorable 4th of July night fire works there -the more innocent atmosphere of the early years of American major league baseball.But that innocence is long gone.
In order to attend these baseball games today families need extra spending money. In Rhode Island the Great Recession never ended. If you want a vision of the future of any new baseball stadium in Providence, check out the haunted and delapidated old Welfare Building.

Dan Porath There is little honest thought about the institution of marriage because most people do marry. And their life and happiness are invested in this most precarious institution. I find that the politically correct Left was quite intellectually dishonest in their case for gay marriage. Do historical materialists( Marx, Engels ) slobber over and sentimentalize bourgeois marriage ? RIPTA chairman Scott Avedisian immediately tried to BLAME THE VICTIM. The poor woman, 31 year old Bobbie Moore, is just a non-person ? Local news media make no effort to talk to her family. friends, neighbors ? On the bus witnesses describe what can only be called VEHICULAR HOMICIDE. Gay marriage still all about MONEY

Today's Catholics who are not " haters " can find a Pre-Vatican II excuse for accepting state recognized gay marriage. I have an old Baltimore Catechism and its tells me that Holy Mother Church will not recognize as "holy " ANY marriage by the STATE.
As a socialist I find a more secular reason to be cynical -not rejecting-of gay marriage: the institution of STATE MARRIAGE is a pillar of bourgeois society and PRIVATE PROPERTY. Ask old Freddy Engels ( " The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State " ) .
Gay marriage will make gay divorce a lawyer's paradise. Even traditional marriage is not all about LOVE. Like traditional marriage it is all about MONEY
